چکیده

Background Rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) is the third most common cause of death in cardiovascular diseases. Despite this high significance, there is still controversy regarding the management of AAAs, as diameter is currently the only accepted parameter to assess risk of rupture. Elastin is the key protein for maintaining stability of the aortic wall. The aim of this study was to evaluate a novel small-molecular-weight elastin-specific MR probe for the in-vivo assessment of aortic wall integrity in AAAs.

Molecular assessment of aortic aneurysm wall integrity using an elastin-specific MR imaging probe

Background The incidence of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) has increased in western societies and complications often lead to life threatening events. There is still controversy regarding the management of medium sized AAAs. Therefore, novel biomarkers, besides aneurysmal diameter, are needed to assess aortic wall integrity and risk of rupture. Elastin is the key protein for maintaining stab...

In Vivo Assessment of Aortic Aneurysm Wall Integrity Using Elastin Specific Molecular Magnetic Resonance Imaging Botnar et al: Assessment of Aortic Wall Integrity Using MRI

Background—The incidence of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) has increased during the last decades. However, there is still controversy regarding the management of medium-sized AAAs. Therefore novel biomarkers, besides aneurysmal diameter, are needed to assess aortic wall integrity and risk of rupture. Elastin is the key protein for maintaining aortic wall tensile strength and stability. The p...

Drug Therapy for Small Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Dear Editor,Abdominal aortic aneurysm is often asymptomatic, less recognized, and causes considerable mortality and morbidity, if missed. The incidence varies from country to country and the occurrence is influenced by modifiable (smoking, coronary heart disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and prolonged steroid therapy) and non-modifiable risk factors (increasing age, male gender, and positive...

Elastin stabilization for treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

BACKGROUND Maintaining the integrity of arterial elastin is vital for the prevention of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) development. We hypothesized that in vivo stabilization of aortic elastin with pentagalloyl glucose (PGG), an elastin-binding polyphenol, would interfere with AAA development. METHODS AND RESULTS Safety and efficacy of PGG treatment were first tested in vitro using cytotoxic...
